How to Activate or Replace a Mobile Broadband / Home Wireless Broadband SIM Card

This article provides all the information you need to activate your Mobile Broadband and Home Wireless Broadband SIM card. For information on Mobile Phone SIM cards, head to this page instead.

Don't have a SIM card? If you've made a purchase online or over the phone, we'll send a SIM card with your delivery. Otherwise, pick one up at your nearest Optus store (just remember to bring 100 points of ID).

I want to replace my SIM card

Before you start

When you change SIM cards, information on your old SIM card may be destroyed. For this reason, we recommend making a back up. Check out Device Help for step by step instructions, or refer to your device manufacturer.

What will I need?

You'll need:

  • Your service details (e.g. service number)
  • Your personal details (e.g. date of birth)
  • The 13 digit number of the back of your new Optus SIM card
  • Your My Account log in details

How do I activate?

Log into My Account and activate your replacement SIM card online. If you've forgotten your My Account log in details, see this article for help first.
Once you're in My Account, select the service, click on settings / manage and follow the onscreen instructions.

It can take 15 minutes to 4 hours to activate a replacement SIM card. Activation is complete when you're able to browse the internet. In the meantime,

  • Insert your replacement SIM card into your device
  • Change your replacement SIM card PIN from the default (0000)
  • If your device is a USB modem, connect it to your computer and install the connection software
  • Periodically turn your device off and on until your replacement SIM has activated
  • If you're using a Tablet, download the My Optus app

I have a new device

If your old and new device take the same size SIM card, simply pop your old SIM card into your new device and you're good to go.   • Your new service number (provided in the welcome letter)

It can take 15 minutes to 4 hours to activate a new SIM card. Activation is complete when you're able to browse the internet. In the meantime,
