How to Activate or Replace a Mobile Phone SIM Card

This article provides all the information you need to activate your Mobile Phone SIM card. For information on Tablet / Mobile Broadband SIM cards, head to this page instead.

Don't have a SIM card? If you've made a purchase online or over the phone, we'll send a SIM card with your delivery. Otherwise, pick one up at your nearest Optus store (just remember to bring 100 points of ID).

  • The 13 digit number of the back of your new Optus SIM card

It can take 15 minutes to 4 hours to activate a replacement SIM card. We'll send an SMS to let you know once it's complete. In the meantime,

  • Insert your replacement SIM card into your device
  • Change your replacement SIM card PIN from the default (0000)
  • Periodically turn your device off and on until your replacement SIM has activated

Before you start

If your old and new device take the same size SIM card, simply pop your old SIM card into your new device and you're good to go. If your new device uses a different size SIM card, head to your nearest Optus store with 100 point of ID. If you're not sure what SIM card size you need, check out Device Help.

I want to transfer my number from another company

Before you start

I'm moving from a carrier that uses the Optus network

(e.g. Virgin, Amaysim, TPG etc.)

So that we can complete your transfer, chat with us here, or call us on . We're open Monday to Friday (8am - 7pm EST).

I'm moving from a carrier that does not use the Optus network

(e.g. Telstra, Vodafone etc.)

If you purchased your new Optus service online or over the phone, then it might already be active!

To check if your service is already active, insert the SIM card into your device and turn it on. You'll receive an SMS from Optus within 5 minutes letting you know that auto-activation has been completed and that your port to Optus will take place in the next 2 business days.

If you didn't receive an SMS, then you can manually activate your service by following the steps shown in the "I want to activate a brand new service" section below.

I want to activate a brand new service

Before you start

What will I need?

You'll need:

  • Your personal details (e.g. date of birth etc.)
  • The 13 digit number of the back of your new Optus SIM card
  • Your new Mobile Phone number (provided in the welcome letter)

If you want to keep your existing number, you will also need:

  • Your existing mobile number
  • Your existing service provider's account number
  • Additional personal details (e.g. full address and driver's licence). These details must be identical to the details held by your existing provider

Important! You can only port your number to Optus when activating a service. You must remember to enter this information when completing the activation.

Note. We can only process ports Monday to Friday (8am - 8pm EST) and Saturday (10am - 6pm EST) (except on national public holidays). If you request a port outside of these hours, your service will remain active with your existing provider until the next porting day.
